How to Remodel Using Kitchen Islands

How to remodel using kitchen islands

Although the kitchen was once a room reserved strictly for preparing food, it has since evolved into much more. The kitchen has become a social area where families gather to discuss the day’s events, plan weekly activities, and enjoy a sit down dinner together. Many homeowners are adding kitchen islands to their kitchen space, as it creates a welcoming space where family and friends can spend time together in a relaxed, casual environment. How often have you had a party and people end up standing in the kitchen?

Before you begin upgrading your kitchen, it’s important to take into consideration what you want to achieve from your finished project. Do you want the space to provide additional work space, an area to socialize, or a combination of both? Do you desire storage for everyday items, or a place to keep frequently used appliances out of sight? These are things you want to have in mind before you begin your remodeling project to get the best results.

One of the newest trends in kitchen design, is the implementation of eco-friendly products. This includes using eco-friendly countertop products made from sustainable materials such as recycled glass, bamboo, Quartz, granite, and other stone materials. Granite colors, Quartz colors, and the like, are all versatile and easy coordinated with virtually any home decor or decorating style. Bamboo is a natural material, which resembles a butcher block finish, and recycled glass is a fun and unique countertop material that will add visual interest to any kitchen. Whether you are upgrading your kitchen entirely, or just adding a new kitchen island to your existing kitchen cabinetry, eco-friendly countertop materials make an impressive statement both visually and environmentally.

When upgrading your kitchen, there are other considerations aside from countertop finish. The kitchen island cabinet height will be determined upon the purpose of the island. Kitchen islands that will be used as a work island, meaning where food will be prepared, are typically placed at 36″. Kitchen islands that are meant to be an eating surface only, are typically placed in at 42″. In addition, homeowners may want to consider the option of using a split level kitchen island cabinet height, meaning one area of the island sit at a higher level than the rest, so that family and guests can sit at the island and socialize at the same time food is prepared. This is a popular option for those that entertain frequently, or for families that spend a great deal of time in the kitchen.

They type of lighting that you select to illuminate your new kitchen island will have a large impact on the overall look and feel of the room. A popular trend is to use pendant lighting above the island surface. Pendant lighting is available to match any home decor, and can be made from various materials and textures. Find pendant lighting for a casual country kitchen, elegant tiffany pendants, or sophisticated contemporary pendant lights. When installing these lights, it is important that they be hung at an adequate height. Hang them too low and people will hit their heads on the lights. Hang them too high, and the lights will not properly illuminate the area. Typically, pendant lights should be hung at height of between 30″ – 36″.

Most kitchen islands that will serve as a work station feature small kitchen sinks for convenience. These kitchen sinks are smaller typical kitchen sinks, and are often referred to as veggie sinks. Select from small round sinks or small rectangular sinks that can fit in any area of the kitchen island. They can be made from materials varying from copper or stainless steel, to porcelain or can even be formed out of the same material used in the countertop.

To get the most from your new kitchen island, consider adding space saving cabinet accessories such as a revolving Lazy Susan to maximize cabinet space, roll out trays that slide into cabinet for storing pots and pans, sink tilt out trays for keeping sponges out of sight, or built in spice racks or cutlery drawers to keep items organized. Personalizing your kitchen space is an exciting part of upgrading your kitchen and can make life much easier too, implementing kitchen islands into your kitchen space is a functional and attractive method of doing just that.  Having a contemporary kitchen on a budget makes me smile even more knowing that I was able to save money while remodeling.
